Bathroom Update V

We have had a busy week. It seemed like the bathroom remodel was slow, slow, slow but then once all the plumbing and tile was in it flew by.
During the last update I shared that the plumbers were here.
It took about 7 hours for the plumbers to move all the supply lines and hook up the new pressure valve for the shower.

The tile guys met the plumber here Monday morning to look at the position of the tub so they would know where to put the shower pan. It is all a tight fit and the whole thing made me nervous just like a cat in a room full of rocking chairs.
That is for my sister. ;)

Tuesday they added all the concrete backer board and built and poured the shower pan.
Wednesday they tiled the shower
Thursday they tiled the floor.
Friday morning they grouted.
The tile guy said it would take two weeks and it only took one.
As Bill said, "They under promised and over delivered."
It made me so happy!

Now it was our turn to crank it out.
Bill and I got to work as soon as we ate dinner Friday night.
He went to Home Depot for supplies.
I covered up all the new tile and got up on the ladder and started scraping popcorn off of the ceiling.
As soon as that was done I rolled on the new paint.
( I have no pictures of this because it was horrible and I was very crabby.)
I had paint issues this weekend. The first one was with the ceiling paint. I bought Valspar. It goes on pink and dries white. Well I have to say I didn't love the product at all. It was steaky and thin. I had to keep rolling on more and more coats. I should have gotten to Sherwin Williams.
The next morning I did all the cutting in of the ceiling paint.
At this point I still thought I would keep the Sherwin Williams Stamped Concrete color.
I love SW but I was a little frustrated that they discontinue colors and paints so often. I had Stamped Concrete for about 6 years. I needed to do some touch ups so Bill got me more paint. The new color didn't match the old color because they changed formulas and it looked a little greener instead of blue/gray. So in order to touch up, I had to repaint the whole wall. That is what I was doing the day I found the mold.
I had two walls that were the old color and two walls that were the new color. I was trying not to get any paint on the two walls that were the old color but the ceiling paint was so thin that it dripped like crazy. Now I had to repaint the two walls that were the old Stamped Concrete. Since I didn't love the new Stamped Concrete I went to get new paint.
Ay yi yi!
I finished painting the walls Saturday night. The new color is Gray Screen. It is a light blue/gray and very pretty.
(and I have a whole can of the same formula to do touch ups.) I chose this color because I wanted a light blue that reads grayer rather than baby blue.
Sunday morning I got up and started painting the trim.
White Duck by Sherwin Williams.
It's what I have been using for my various paint projects.
It will be my new trim color throughout the house once I get motivated to start painting doors.

Bill spent all weekend fixing sheetrock, cutting trim for the baseboards and making the surround for the tub.
His millwork on the new windowsills is amazing. We had water damage where the windows leaked.

He picked out the trim. I love it!
Poor thing, he had to make several trips to Home Depot for the right supplies. He worked like a trooper and by Sunday night we were both exhausted. My legs ached from climbing and up and down that twelve foot ladder.
The plumbers were here this morning installing all the faucets. :)
This afternoon the glass guy comes to measure for the shower surround.
I will be fluffing and staging and then it will be time for the reveal!
Here is a sneak peak.

Home Tour

Welcome to our home!
We live in a typical suburban tract home.
Our house was built in 1990 and we have been working to remove some builder grade features.
Come on in.
This is the entryway.
To the left is the dining room.
Down the hall to the right is the office/guest room.

There is a full bath to the left.

The living room is to the right of the entry.

To the left is my cute updated kitchen.
Beyond the kitchen is the sunroom.
The laundry is to the left of the kitchen.

Let's head on upstairs.
Our gallery wall of family.
The master bedroom is to the right.
The master bath pre-bath crash.

The gameroom to the left.
We have two bedrooms off of the game room.
Rebekah's room.
Jonnie's old room. Now it is called the scary doll room.
The kid's bath.
Finally the back yard.

There you have it.
Thanks for stopping in.
Hopefully, it will give you a better sense of the whole house.
Sprinkled with a tour,
Katie

How to Re-design Your Landscape

Spring is here in Texas.
We have done quite a few improvements in the front yard, since we started trying to fix the problem with our grass.
Read about it here.
Our house is 20 years old and mature trees and shrubs abound.
I had a row of boring, huge, overgrown Boxwoods in front of my house.
Boxwood shrubs should not top out half way up the window. We tried trimming them to no avail.
Nothing would grow in front of them. The flowers you see in the picture below are hanging basket sized plants just stuck in holes.
They never grew any bigger than they were when I bought them.
Every year I had to dig up hundreds of tiny little roots that were grown all over right under the top of the soil.
Mr. Bill decided the shrubs had to go.
Usually I am the one who wants to make changes, but this time he set the ball in motion and I resisted.
I didn't want to proceed until we had a plan in place.
I have heard about people getting a landscape company to draw up plans for them. I really didn't want to do that.
We have a fabulous nursery with native Texas plants and thought that we could at least draw a plan ourselves.
We drove around looking at homes that had new landscapes.
New landscaping doesn't have a row of all the same shrub.
There is a layering and a mix of sizes, shapes and colors.
We wanted a mix of flowering and non-flowering hardy, xeriscape shrubs. We would add in color with annuals and perennials.
We were in the midst of a horrible drought and we didn't want to be irresponsible during the drought and after. Our desire is to be as free from watering as possible. I sat down and pulled out my native Texas gardening books and listed shrubs that would be good for our zone.

We are right on the line between 7a and 8b.
A local nursery will know your zone or you can google it.
I listed plants that I liked and read about sizes. One of the big mistakes in my neighborhood has been the size of the shrubbery. Our builder planted too many shrubs that grew too big.
I checked the maximum height of my plantings to ensure I won't have stuff topping out over my window sills again.
I wanted to keep my Hydrangea, Crepe Myrtle and Asian Star Jasmine.
We planned a taller plant for the corner opposite the Crepe Myrtle, and several dwarf varieties in the middle under the windows.
I drew my plan and we headed to the nursery.
We chose a local garden shop that uses all organic fertilizers and pesticides. They were a great help and let us "try" out our landscape there under the trees. It looked great but small compared to our giant boxwoods.
We got a Cherry Laurel for the corner.
Abelia
Pittosporum
I filled in the rest with Liriope, Daylilies, and Begonias.

The Begonias can finally be planted in the ground.
I pulled this child sized park bench out of someone's trash on my way to work.
I also pulled this darling adirondack chair out of the neighbors trash. I knew it would be cute holding a plant.

We are finishing up the last few feet of a rock walkway.
I'll show you it when it's all finished.

Oh! Apparently Rebekah wasn't finished either if the updated plans are any indication.
I am just not sure where we are going to get a the stuff to make the unicorn topiary and the koi pond.
I found the updated plans much, much later. I never noticed that she had added to the plan.
I hope you are blessed to have children with a sense of humor.
They make life so much fun!
These plans are a keeper.

Sprinkled with new shrubs,
Katie
