Antiquing in the Country

It has been a tough couple of weeks. Mr. Bill was sick one weekend and I got sick the next. Two different sicknesses. After two weekends sort of stuck in the house, I was ready to hit the road out to the lake. We were guests at the most wonderful and relaxing spot on Lake Bob Sandlin in East Texas.
Here is a shot of the lake last summer. It was very low due to our drought.

The towns around the lake have charming town squares with darling antique shops.
This time we went to Sulphur Springs, Texas.
Town Square Antiques is a wonderful place.

Here are my finds.

I found this cute shelf for $5.OO.
I can't wait to revamp it sort of like this:

I also found two oil paintings

The cottage was $15.00 and the rose was $10.00. I thought both of them were great deals.

This super cute watering can was $9.50. I plan on using this to water my plants in my garden room.

An old drawer and some other cute items.

I love the shabby French heart
Heart Pillow from Town Square Antiques

I will probably use this escutcheon plate and the little insulator for my shelf somehow. I think that I have an old door knob in the garage somewhere. I may marry the two together.

I love these Reader's Digest Books. Of course I love the purple color on this one. I love decorating with these and this one was only 50 cents. Maybe I should try reading them!

Thank you to our wonderful host and hostess.
We enjoyed a delicious pulled pork sandwich for dinner, a movie and a fabulous view of the lake. It was great to get away, relax, laugh and shop.
I am in the midst of painting my garden room. Some of my new finds will end up in there.

This is what it looked like.
I can't wait to finish! It will be lightened and brightened.

Sprinkled with fun finds,
Katie

Still Feeling The Chalkboard Love

I didn't realize the depth of chalkboard love out in cyberspace until I was "invited" to join pinterest and I saw all of the pins. This also may seem a little ridiculous but I hadn't read too many blogs until I started this blog. I read a few fashion blogs but not really decorating blogs. I had no idea there were so many  out there. After I check my facebook, email and pinterest I check out my favorite blogs. Many of them are buzzing about chalkboards.
I broke down and bought some chalkboard paint and decided to try a few of the projects I have seen on pinterest. It was 16.00 for a quart.

Here are the projects I did.
flower pot
crate for my pantry project Here:
coffee mug $1.99 at Tuesday Morning
galvanized tub for pantry (I don't like the grape picture so I'll paint over it.)

I taped off the area I wanted to paint with scotch tape.
I painted one coat.

The crate came out cute and now holds popcorn.
I love the chip tub.

I am also wild about the flower pot.

The coffee mug was a fail. It started to chip as soon as the paint was dry.

You may have seen my initial blog post about chalkboards.
Here:
I've been inspired to keep adding touches around the house.
I have used almost every remnant of that little child's chalkboard in little gold frames.

I have one more to show you for my office, but I am doing some other memo boards for that room. I want to show them all at once.
I also got this adorable heart from Michael's
This antique spice cabinet from my grandparents is really one of my favorite things. I love hanging seasonal stuff on the pulls.

I did these cute hearts for my team at work. I showed them off when I talked about this wonderful cupcake recipe. Here:

My paperwhites should bloom in a few days. I think this is my favorite of the bunch! Have fun creating some chalkboard magic for yourself.

Sprinkled with chalkboard love,

Last Minute Valentine's Day Stuff

Oh my gravy! I think I am in heaven with this cupcake recipe.
I have been on a cupcake kick since Christmas. The cupcake is a perfect size and since they seem to freeze well, I can put them in the freezer and defrost one for dessert. They are perfect for Mr. Bill. They don't have too many carbs. (Almost had a blogger fail! Spell check would not have caught crabs. Big difference in meaning!) Ha ha.

I wanted to do some cupcakes for my team and thought chocolate with these cute cupcake liners would be fun. Of course I needed Valentine sprinkles. I got these at Michaels.

Beware these are from a cake recipe called Black Magic Cake!
1 3/4 c flour
2c sugar
3/4 c cocoa powder
2 tsp baking soda
1tsp baking powder
1tsp salt
2 large eggs
1 cup black coffee-luke warm
1 cup buttermilk
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1tsp vanilla

Mix and beat 2 minutes
Use a soup ladle to spoon into cupcake liners. I filled the cupcakes 3/4ths full. Some of them leaked over. This batter is super thin and it made a mess!
I promise it is worth it though.
Bake a dozen at a time @ 350 degrees until cake tester comes out clean.
15 -18minutes. Test after 15 minutes.
It made two dozen cupcakes.
Some of them looked like this.

Clearly I filled it too full.

I made the chocolate frosting that was in the recipe in the link. I did not like it. It said to cool the melted chocolate. When I made the frosting it had tiny chips in it and it tasted way too sweet or something.
I threw that away and started again.
1/2 cup cocoa. I use Hersey's
2 cups powdered sugar
3/4 stick butter
2 Tablespoons water
1/4 tsp vanilla
Mix well. Add more water or powdered sugar until you get a spreadable consistency. This frosting has a wonderful hint of chocolate without going over the top.
I put the frosting in a bag and piped it. I'm not sure they were the prettiest cupcakes I have ever seen.
The cake is very glossy so I am not sure I like it showing.
While the cupcakes were baking, I made these tags from 25 cent hearts also from Michaels. I painted them with chalkboard paint.

When they were dry, I drilled small holes and threaded ribbon through them. I wrote a little message and tied them onto to the bagged cupcakes.

I thought I was in heaven when I tasted this cupcake. They are moist and rich but not too doughy.
They really are Black Magic though, because they caused me to not eat my supper.

It Feels Like Spring

Happy Sunday! I hope you had a restful weekend.
I went to Walmart yesterday. I had to pick up some groceries but I also picked up some new dish towels. I don't know why but a few new dish towels and a couple of pot holders makes me happy. I love a bouquet of flowers or a new plant. This is right up there with that. I like to change things around for the seasons and holidays and since it feels like spring it seemed time to freshen up the linens in the kitchen.
I choose red. It seemed appropriate for Valentine's Day and yet crisp for spring.
Walmart had a pretty good selection. I don't go for the dish towels with pictures. If I stick with stripes or checks I will use a towel until it wears out.  The package with the checked towel came from Tuesday Morning. The cost for this group of dish towels and the pot holders was about the same as a couple of bouquets of grocery store flowers, but these will last much longer. I saved enough shopping at the super store to fund the towels.

I found these as I was browsing online.
These are so cute!
They look so vintage to me.

They would look cute with this little vintage dish towel. I found this darling red and green apple towel at the local craft store a few weeks ago.

I'll save this one for display only. Do you do that? I don't think my husband's family had good towels on the towel bars and other towels to use. Mine did and it drives Mr. Bill nuts.

I can't be trusted with paper towels. I love having them, but I go through a roll so quickly. If I have a fresh dish towel handy at all times. I use far fewer paper towels. It's one small thing to help the planet.
Happy Valentine's Day!
Sprinkled with new towels,
Katie

Counter Redo

What do you do when paint alone is not enough to fix a decorating problem?  Our kitchen counters in our 1990's kitchen were worn out. They were in bad shape and the joint in back of the sink was swollen from water damage. I would have loved to get granite counters but I just could not spend that much with a child in college. I couldn't stand the counters anymore and did not want to wait another 5 years until everyone was through with school. I decided to try tiling them.

Our house when we first got married had 4x4 square tiles in a light tan and brown. After 30 years they still looked pretty good. I thought white square tiles would look like a french bakery.
I figured the tiling part would be easy except for the corner by the sink. Bill and I have tiled quite a bit, so I knew what to do but I was putting it off because of the mess that the tile saw makes. But it is a wonderful tool and it is well worth the money if you are doing a big project.
I got enough tile to do just the long buffet. I figured if it didn't work I could do a different kind of countertop and I wouldn't be out too much money. Mixing materials in the same kitchen was being done quite a bit so I thought it was worth a shot. The old Formica peeled off in one big sheet. I tiled right on top of the plywood. I didn't even do anything to clean off the old glue. I have had no problem with the tiles staying put.
The walls in the old paint color: Sherwin Williams- Halycon Green.

The kitchen color now: Kilim Beige also by Sherwin Williams
It was so easy, I went back for more tile. This corner was also a piece of cake.
The island required some figuring out to get the cuts in the right place.

The challenge was the corner by the sink. I knew that I needed Mr. Bill's help with that. We took out the old sink and discovered that there was mildew and water damage from the old counter. Bill and a friend rebuilt a new counter out of plywood topped with hardy board. We shouldn't have the same water problem again.

This project typifies Bill and I and our spending. He thought we should splurge on the sink because we were saving on the countertop. I seem to always want to do things inexpensively. In contrast he knows when and where we should spend to get a good look. I think the Elkay sink is beautiful.

The lighting is from three different stores, Lowes, Home Depot and a lighting outlet. We just went with Oil Rubbed Bronze with frosted shades.
I see my pup slipped in the picture before the timer when off. I was looking for her too.
We have replaced the appliances as they break. We now have 3 out of 4 in Stainless. All from Sears. (Now if that white refrigerator would just...)
I suppose you are wondering about the wall color. I painted the Robin's Egg Blue in 2006. I loved that color but felt it to be somewhat dark. Someone also told me they thought blue in a kitchen was unappetizing. I think they were right because something always felt off to me. I thought about repainting many times but just didn't feel up to it. This kitchen has a lot of cutting out around cabinets and doors. Finally last summer I was ready for something neutral.
I love accessorizing with a neutral kitchen. I had fun pulling out my blue willow last summer which had not been out for a long time. Next I may go with red.
I am wild about red kitchen accessories.
I have had friends that have gone with 12 by 12 granite tiles. They look fabulous.
If I had it to do again. I think that is what I should have done. But I was afraid of cutting granite.
I knew that my white tiles would not be maintenance free. I bleach the grout every two weeks and have had to float some more grout in a couple of spots. One tile has cracked (no one has owned up to that) and a couple have chipped.  I hoped that this fix would be a five year fix. And that by that time we could afford a solid surface. Tiling was worth it to get rid of those awful laminate counters.

Sprinkled with tiles,
Katie
