Fall Decorations on the Deck

We are finally are enjoying a little cooler weather here in Texas.
We had a pretty mild July, but August was hot!!
Not as hot as last year but still uncomfortable.
We have hadn't been enjoying the deck since June.

I told you about my cushion update.
Here.
I made the cushions out of drop cloths.
We have a pretty dry climate, but even with that, my cushions  got some mildew. I wasn't too happy about it. I even put them up when rain was in the forecast.
I had to wash my cushions before I could do any decorating.
I took them apart and  washed them in hot water with bleach.
It didn't get all of the stains out but they looked good enough to last another season.
I will recover them next summer with something else.
So...
Drop Cloth Fail!!

Despite the epic drop cloth fail, I had fun pulling stuff out for our autumn deck.

This used to be our step stool until I started calling it the "step stool of death."
Suddenly, a new one appeared.
:)
I'm not subtle at all!!

It came from a garage sale a million years ago (when we were newlyweds.)

I found this darling owl votive holder at a thrift store. It was a few years before owls became king of all decorating knick-knacks.

I made the throw for Mr. Bill.
In that I mean, I brought it home from Cloth World.

I went with rust instead of orange fabrics.
It tones the color scheme down a bit, but still feels like fall.

A hot cup of coffee and I am in heaven.

Fall Front Porch

We don't have a large front porch.
I try to make the most of it.
We replaced our door a few years ago.
We chose this Craftsman style door.
It looks fabulous during the fall.
We got the bushel basket this summer from Hobby Lobby.
It takes 3 mums to fill it.

I picked up the orange Halloween lights a couple of years ago.
The little grandson that visits across the street saw them and loved them.
He made his mommy run out and get some for their house.

The garland is just a grapevine wreath and a leaf garland from Big Lots.

Mr. Bill gets startled by the scarecrow usually once a season. He is a very early riser. If he sees it before his morning coffee he thinks someone is on the porch.
I really should move it, but the thought of him getting startled cracks me up.
I can't tell you how many times Mr. Bill has startled me.
I am easily spooked.

We found this light at a garage sale for  $5.00. I thought we would get new glass for it, but the amber glass looks beautiful during autumn.

I promise I didn't see my scarecrow was leaning when I took these pictures.  I would have taken new photos but kept humming,
"What do you do with a drunken scarecrow" so I decided to leave him.
I pulled the wagon out of someone's trash.

We get a fair amount of trick or treaters in our neighborhood.

I think they will enjoy coming to the door.

Now I just need to stock up on candy.

Purging Some Treasure

Mr. Bill and I have picked up some cute treasures over the years.
We were married just a little over a year when we had Chris.
We both thought we would have a little more time as "double income no kids."
I wanted to stay at home with my baby, so we made sacrifices.
One of the things we sacrificed was having the latest and greatest technology
and
 having new furniture.
It has only been in the last few years that we have been filling in with stuff that is brand new.
We usually bought our sofas new, but most of our other stuff came from all over.
Garage sales or thrift stores and antique shops for the most part. But we even pulled stuff off of the curb.
I am a bit of a hoarder when it involves my stuff that was a good deal!!!
But...
We have had pieces that just weren't both of our styles.
I may have liked it and he didn't, or visa versa.
This weekend we went through and donated some of those pieces that didn't "fit" anymore.

Sometimes it came down to a piece being too dainty to go with other modern height furniture.
We kept trying to think about people who might want this stuff.
We really couldn't  think of anybody.
I guess if no one wants these little end tables and chairs, we really don't need them either.
Table not the lamp.

Bill is not a stuff it in the attic kind of guy. I am willing to do that, but he is not.

As I watched Bill load our "treasures" in the pickup, I had a brief feeling of remorse.
They looked cute piled in there.
Should I save them for a someday shop?
No.
I have to remember that I had them for a season and now they will go to someone's home or shop where they will work and fit.

I had a feeling of
peace knowing that we are helping out a good cause and we are de-cluttering a bit.
Good bye thrifty treasures.

Sprinkled with downsizing,
Katie

Kitchen Reveal

Mr. Bill finally agreed to having the kitchen cabinets painted.
Then he wanted to know how much. :/
The painters had already primed so it was too late for that.
:)
I told you about my experience with having them done professionally.
Read about it here.

I have also painted cabinets myself--4 times.

It was not fun at all.
I sort of said I would never do it again after the last time.
Which is why I lived with the oak longer than I wanted to.
I am not as young as I used to be and I knew that it would take me weeks.  I was sure I would have paint in my hair.
  Here is the deal.
If you have read this blog at all, you know that I am a do it yourself kind of girl.
 But...
sometimes it is good to know when you can't do something.
It was worth it just to fork over some cash and let someone else deal with the mess.
We did this makeover over the course of the last 4 years.
Here is a picture before we did anything.
I tried to make the best of these cabinets and painted the kitchen robin's egg blue.
I actually liked it pretty well until a friend of mine told me that a blue kitchen in un-appetizing.
I was perfectly able to eat in a blue kitchen.
Things started to break and wearing out, so we started working on the kitchen piece by piece.
Here is an approximate break down of the cost.
Counters- $200 Home Depot
Sink $400 Home Depot

Microwave $300 Sears

Stove $800

Dishwasher$800
Refrigerator $1200

Table and Chairs $600
Ceiling $1200 (repair damage from water leak, scrape popcorn and paint)
Cabinet painting $1850

Knobs $80

I think this is a very frugal kitchen makeover.
It literally feels like I am standing in a brand new kitchen.
It took time and patience but I think it was worth it.
We've got some fall birthdays coming up.

Suddenly, I feel like having people over again.

I just love it.
Sprinkled with white cabinets, ;)
